Yes it can be challenging taking care of a baby and you may be nervous at first, but many times by doing what comes naturally, you get the hang of it pretty quickly. Below are some things to keep in mind when caring for a baby.
Love
From the moment of conception, babies need your love and care. When they are in the womb, love can be shown by taking care of your body and health. By maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding stressful situations, you are helping the growth of your baby. Babies feel what you feel and "consume" what you consume. This is also why it is extremely important to avoid the use of drugs and alcohol, including tobacco products. Studies have shown that the use of drugs and/or alcohol can cause mild to serious birth defects, such as learning and behavioral problems, small birth size and weight, premature birth, higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome, etc.
Once the baby is born, you can show them love by talking, singing, and playing with your baby. This is how they learn and grow. By talking and singing to them, you are teaching them language and expression, and by playing with them you are teaching them hand and eye coordination. Don't be afraid to sound or look silly, it's acceptable when it comes to babies!
Time
It's not hard to believe that although babies are very small and only require a few things (e.g., food, a clean diaper, and sleep), they still take up most of your time, especially newborns. In the beginning, they may need their diapers changed on average, about 8-12 times a day, usually with every feeding. They eat on average every 2-3 hours if breastfeeding, or 4-5 hours if formula-fed. Now you must also factor in the time that it takes to burp them, as well. If a baby takes 30 minutes to eat and 15 minutes is spent burping him/her, that's about 45 minutes spent during just one feeding. Then by the time the baby is finished eating, it will be time to eat again in 1-2 hours or 3-4 hours. In between this time, you are either changing them, playing with them, or they are sleeping.
Dedication
It is obvious that caring for a baby requires much dedication. It is not something you can give up on and decide you don't want to do it anymore. Most of the time, this is not an issue. Instinct kicks in and bonding with the baby occurs, and wanting to care for your baby only comes naturally. You somehow find a way to manage time and resources with the demands of your baby and your normal every day tasks.
