Keep In Mind

You may not have a baby in your belly anymore, but you still are eating "for" your baby, whether you are nursing or not. If you are nursing, it is important to stay well hydrated so that your body has enough fluid for itself and so that you are able to produce enough milk for your baby. Eating healthy also helps to produce healthy milk for the baby. Often times, a mother who breastfeeds does not significantly reduce the amount of food they eat after they deliver the baby. This is because she is technically still eating for two.

If you are not nursing, eating healthy is still good for your baby, since it will help to keep you energized enough to keep up with the demands of your baby.

If you are unsure about what or how much you are eating, it is best to consult your health care provider for advice. Again, you should use the Food Guide Pyramid (MyPyramid for Moms) as a guide for the types of food and servings you should aim for.
